Considered as a rare language, Portuguese is taught throughout the world, and it is the seventh most spoken language in the world.
Portuguese is spoken by around 230 million people, mostly in eight countries, called Lusophones: Portugal, Angola, Brazil, Bissau Guinea, Mozambique, São Tomé e Principe and Timor.
Portuguese is therefore an international language, it is the official language of both the European Union (alongside with English, French and Spanish) and Mercosur (with Spanish).
Furthermore, Portuguese is the most spoken language in South America and the second in Latin America, thanks to Brazil and its huge size and population.
